☆CHARACTER
Age: 15.
Species: Superpowered human, known as a NEXT in-universe (Noted Entity with eXtraordinary Talents).
Canon: Tiger & Bunny.
Canon Point: After the end of the series but before the second movie (Tiger & Bunny: The Rising).
Character Info: Here at the Tiger & Bunny Wikia!
Personality: Pao-Lin is a generally cheerful, optimistic, and energetic girl. Despite the dangerous nature of her work, she approaches it boldly and bravely, leaping in to catch criminals as quickly as she can (which sometimes results in her killstealing from the other Heroes) and putting her electrical powers to use when the opportunity arises (serving as a conductor for snapped cables that power the city's monorail system). That's not to say she has no fear, because she is still just a young teenager underneath that heroic exterior. But she's chosen to believe in the best and to not let things get her down for very long. In most situations that would scare ordinary civilians, she can keep her cool and do what she can to get innocents out of danger. Out of the eight Heroes signed to HeroTV's roster, she's one of two Heroes (the other being Sky High) who can be reasonably assumed to have joined because they truly wanted to help people out, and not for any other ulterior motives (Blue Rose only became a Hero because the company that sponsors required it as part of the contract she signed to become a singer; Barnaby Brooks Jr. became a Hero to find the man who murdered his parents as well as to pay back the man who took him in after he was orphaned). She is also extremely protective of those she considers her friends; lay a finger (or word) on them and you're liable to get a lightning bolt to the face.
Off-camera, Pao-Lin remains as earnest as ever but with a touch more awkwardness about it. She sometimes isn't aware of certain social niceties or cues (no, Pao-Lin, it is not acceptable to squeeze your co-worker's boobs out of curiosity) and many basic innuendos will fly over her head (she has no idea what "in the buff" means). She is also very much a tomboy, much to her caretaker Natasha's consternation. She only makes concessions to traditional femininity because of her parents expressing their love through "girly" gifts like a flower hairpin (later revealed to have been chosen because the flower used means "thinking of you always" in flower language), a cute floral dress, and frilly pajamas, and she only thought of making these concessions in the first place because one of the other Heroes (himself a parent) had to explain her parents' thinking to her. Left to her own choices, she prefers wearing things like her yellow and black tracksuit with training weights on her wrists and ankles. Indeed, physical activity is where she shines best -- she spends quite a fair amount of time training (running over six miles a day, 250 push-ups and sit-ups, staff practice) and actually ends up feeling a little ill if she doesn't exercise. That being said, she likes watching anime in her spare time as well. (And getting emotional over anime endings. And drinking cream soda to make herself feel better about it.)
☆INTERSTELLAR
Choice Instrument: Lead, Guitar, Drums (maybe something like a tambourine or a triangle), Oboe
Rockstar Persona: In terms of baseline personality, Pao-Lin hasn't changed overly much from her canon self. She's still cheerful, optimistic, and energetic, with that teenage awkwardness and naivete lurking around. She takes enthusiastically to her profession with an eye for doing her best and expanding what her "best" consists of.
However, Pao-Lin has lost much of what had previously marked her as "boyish," such as her interest in keeping active and practicing martial arts. She now prefers going shopping with gal pals, experimenting with make-up, talking/daydreaming about romance, and other stereotypically "girly" things. Instead of plain athletic clothes, Pao-Lin loves wearing the frilliest, laciest, cutest stuff she can find. Which is good, because her managers have decided that she'd be waaaay more marketable if she were an adorable pop star akin to Japanese aidorus. She retains her gluttonous side as a fun "quirk" to make her more down-to-earth, but in public she's only allowed to be seen gorging on various desserts and sweet things (because anything else is just not as endearing), and even then she's not allowed to eat as much as she would like to. In short, giant appetite aside, she's meant to be this dainty china doll.
And, as befitting an intended image of someone fragile and helpless, Pao-Lin is no longer as ready to help out people in trouble as she used to be. She'll do favors and errands for bandmates and management and fans and such, but when it comes down to something more dangerous, she shrinks away, unsure about her own abilities to do any good. Certainly she wouldn't know what to do to defend herself. It doesn't help that Pao-Lin sometimes falls prey to spells of...well, general ickiness (which includes but is not limited to weakness, dizziness, and nausea). She's had this "mystery sickness" ever since she was young, and her parents were very protective of her for a while because of it. However, once she expressed a wish to go into music, her parents decided that they should let her follow her dreams, in case her illness took her too young. It's well-known among the public that she suffers from this, thanks to her marketing team intending to make her more relatable (look, this idol has problems like you!), more inspiring (even though she's sick, she's still following her dreams and working hard!), and more precious (poor Pao-Lin, she could die at any moment, don't you just want to protect her/help her/support her by buying her music and merchandise?). Pao-Lin typically feels better whenever she's rehearsing a dance routine or otherwise being physically active, but since her management is worried about working her too hard, they try to make her sit still and rest whenever they can. How kind and caring of them...right? Pao-Lin knows that her managers have her best interests in mind, and she's thankful to them for giving her such wonderful opportunities, so she does what she's told as best as she's able -- even if it means forgoing that last meatbun, sticking only to proscribed rehearsal times for dancing, and not putting herself in danger to save someone else.
Ideal CR: I'd like Pao-Lin to be able to think of her bandmates as family, or at least partners that she can rely on! And I really would like her to be able to look up to a strong female role model, like a surrogate big sister that she can talk to about various things.
